KOICA and Ministry of Environment Begin a Campaign of Using Eco Bag

Phnom Penh (November 23, 2017): The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) together with the Ministry of Environment organized the “National Clean Environment Day” under the theme “Let’s Clean Our Houses”, “Clean Environment, No Waste, No Plastic Waste, and No Pollution” on November 23, 2017.

The “National Clean Environment Day” is an outreach program and it is intended to bring citizens together from every corner of the country in a simple activity that will benefit their local environments. This event is also to raise public awareness of environmental issues and to appeal for every individual’s participation in the mission of environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and appropriate use of natural resources to ensure environmental sustainability.

In the morning, the event took place at Phnom Penh Thmey Primary School under the presidency of Mr. Jeong Yun Gil, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, H.E. Ms. Ngin Lina, Director General of the General Department of Environmental Knowledge and Information of the Ministry of Environment, and H.E. Suy Serith, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality.

On the occasion, Mr. Jeong Yung Gil mentioned that the environmental sector is not included in KOICA’s priority area in assistance strategy for Cambodia, but, KOICA decided to support this campaign because this event has special meaning not only for Cambodian people but also for all over the world. He also said that the culture of using eco-bags is actively introduced in the Republic of Korea on daily basis by ordinary Korean people. There are no special expenses for this, the only intention to be in harmony with nature. He also hoped that this campaign becomes the first step in usage of eco bags in daily shopping of Cambodian citizens.

For her part, H.E. Ms. Ngin Lina said “the Cambodian government issued sub-degree N0. 47 to demonstrate the support of this program on June 12, 1995 by choosing November 23 to be the National Clean Environment Day because this program aims to encourage all people to participate the Clean Environment in Phnom Penh, public areas, house, pagoda, school, hospital, market and business center etc…”.

In addition, on the same day, in the afternoon, KOICA also did another activity named “The Hand-over Ceremony of Rubbish Bin” at Trapeang Anhchanh Primary School. This activity was organized under collaboration with Holt Children’s Services, Inc. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Jeong Yun Gil, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, and Mr. Khim Sunsoda, Deputy Governor of Pursenchey district. The ceremony of handover and receipt of the rubbish bin will be immediately followed by the awareness raising activities. Besides, CAMKAA, founded in Cambodia since 2002, distributed sport materials for community children as social activity. The ceremony mainly aims at providing the rubbish bins to community people of Trapeang Anhchanh Community located in Sangkat Trapeang Krosaing, Khan Posenchey, Phnom Penh. It is expected that the rubbish bins provided will help keep the community clean and healthy. Also, the community will improve their knowledge and understanding of hygiene and environment.
