KOICA and Ministry of Environment Join a Campaign of Using Eco Bag on National Clean Environment Day

Phnom Penh: The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) together with the Ministry of Environment will held “National Clean Environment Day” under theme of “Let’s Clean Our Houses”, “Clean Environment, No Waste, No Plastic Waste, and No Pollution” on November 23, 2017 in Phnom Penh. This campaign is aligned to Cambodian National Clean Environment Day that Cambodian government always celebrate this ceremony every November 23rd every year for the past 22 years since 1995 based on SUB-DECREE No.47 ON THE CREATION OF THE NATIONAL CLEAN ENVIRONMENT DAY. The campaign aims to raise awareness of people to pay stronger attention to overconsumption of plastic and alarm them to properly prepare their plastic waste. The campaign is organized under collaboration with two organizations, the Ministry of Environment in morning and the Korean NGO, Holt Children’s Services Inc., in afternoon.

The “National Clean Environment Day” is an outreach program and it is intended to bring citizens together from every corner of the country in a simple activity that will benefit their local environments. This event is also to raise public awareness of environmental issues and to appeal for every individual’s participation in the mission of environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and appropriate use of natural resources to ensure environmental sustainability.

In the morning, the event will be presided over by Mr. Jeong Yun Gil, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, and Her Excellency Ngin Lina, Director General of the General Directorate of Environmental Knowledge and Information of the Ministry of Environment. The campaign will be taken place in Phnom Penh Thmey Primary School and at Phsar Dey Hoy. The celebration is expected to attract more than 500 people, including decision makers and officials of the Ministry of Environment, KOICA Cambodia Office, Cambodia-Korea Alumni Association (CAMKAA), representatives from national and international NGOs, local officials and public, waste collection company, and youths and school students. The participants will provide eco-bags made of fabric to people in Phsar Dey Hoy after the rubbish collection along the roadside with education message aiming to motivate people to use eco-bag for purchasing at market and to avoid overuse of plastic.

In addition, at the same day of afternoon, KOICA will also do another activity named “The Hand-over Ceremony of Rubbish Bin” at Trapeang Anhchanh Primary School. This activity is organized under collaboration with Holt Children’s Services, Inc. The ceremony will be presided over by Mr. Jeong Yun Gil, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, and Mr. Khim Sundoda, Deputy Governor of Posen Chey District. The ceremony of handover and receipt of the rubbish bin will be immediately followed by the awareness raising activities. Also during the event, the Cambodia-Korea Alumni Association (CAMKAA); which is the social, cultural, and academic community, and is not political or non-profit making, which was found in Cambodia since 2002 under the support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of the Republic of Korea, will distribute sport materials for community children as social activity. There will be around 160 participants in attendance. Those 160 participants include villagers from Tropaing Anchanh Community, Cambodia-Korea Alumni Association (CAMKAA) members, local authorities, KOICA Korean volunteer team and staff from KOICA as well the Holt Children’s Services, Inc. The ceremony mainly aims at providing the rubbish bins to community people of Trapeang Anhchanh Community located in Sangkat Trapeang Krosaing, Khan Posenchey, Phnom Penh. It is expected that the rubbish bins provided will help keep the community clean and healthy. Also, the community will improve their knowledge and understanding of hygiene and environment.
